Living it up in Hadestown is an experience like no other. With intimate Australian theaters, spectators can experience the drama on a deeper level, which enhances the emotional effect. Hades' irresistible allure, Persephone's defiant spirit, and Orpheus's passionate song will engulf you. When you watch Hadestown in Australia, audiences enter a fantastical but very familiar realm of lovers, gods, and dreamers. The Hadestown ensemble doubles as an orchestra and characters onstage. Streamed by over 350 million devoted listeners and adored by fans all around the world, Hadestown is a defiantly hopeful theatrical experience that will take you on a journey to the underworld and back. Not just one, but two mythic love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – are here to reinstate your faith in underworld romance.

Hadestown tells a stirring tale of love, optimism, and rebellion through the use of contemporary musical genres and elements borrowed from Greek mythology. By reimagining old mythology through a modern prism, Hadestown gives ageless topics a sense of urgency and reliability. The set evokes both the gloomy underworld and the optimistic world above by combining legendary motifs with a rustic industrial design.

An important part of the design is the lighting, which may change greatly to represent the brightness and darkness, optimism and pessimism

The Story

The Greek myths of Hades and Persephone and Orpheus and Eurydice are retold in Hadestown. The passionate and self-reliant Orpheus falls head over heels for the fiery and free-spirited Eurydice. However, when Eurydice is driven to Hadestown by terrible circumstances, Orpheus sets out on a perilous quest, drawing strength from his music and faith, to return her. Audiences also see that the icy ruler of Hades and the goddess of spring and rebirth, Persephone, have a tense relationship that reflects the difficulties Orpheus and Eurydice face. Love, power, and giving and taking are all explored in their narrative.

The enchanting Hermes narrates the story, while a group of Muses and the Fates provide further insight and comments.
